From the Artist In my shop in Black Mountain, NC, I design and build contemporary furniture and accessories using premium hardwoods from our Southern Appalachian region and from other parts of the world. I work alone, from the initial design and selection of woods to the final delivery of the finished piece. This work has been a full-time occupation for me since 1981, when I graduated from the Professional Crafts Program at Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC.
My rocking chair, available in a number of wood combinations, is the most challenging piece I have in regular production, containing 9 bent laminations: the top crest rail, the 6 vertical back slats, and the 2 rocker runners. These are multiple thin strips of wood I glue and bend on a form to result in a strong, repeatable curve shape. Along with lathe-turned parts, mortise and tenoned seat frame and upholstered seat, these parts make up a strong and extremely comfortable chair.
My tables, with their signature curving legs, I build in a variety of woods and dimensions from coffee tables to dining tables. With all my furniture, I usually combine two woods to provide nice visual contrast within the piece.
