William Henry Price
Painter - Asheville, NC

From the Artist
I grew up exploring the creeks and fields of eastern Pennsylvania, and as a child I painted pictures of jungle cats, Indians, and clipper ships out in rough weather. I have always wanted images filled with wildness, and in a way, after all these years, I’m still painting the leopard’s spots.

At the beginning of the process, I just go on instinct. A dark grey shape turns to crimson and gold at the edges. But it might be the sound of the brook that is coming into it somehow, or maybe the darting look of a sparrow. So I start painting patterns and traceries on the canvas, all the while attuning to that brook, and letting it talk to me. Often an image comes to mind, and I think, “Oh, I can’t put that in!” But you’ve got to be reckless here, and just follow the impulse. The images do take shape and combine in exciting ways. My paintings always surprise me.

We all need to look up from our routines, I think. Part of the impetus of my work is to evoke our sense of awe and astonishment in this spectacle of life. These paintings are really love letters to Life, and I don’t hold back.

I received an MFA degree from Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers, and a BFA from Boston University. I taught painting and design at Seton Hall University for seven years before becoming co-director of the Cross-Cultural Institute in New York, a non-profit dedicated to inter-cultural cooperation and exchange. More recently I taught Contemporary Art History and Drawing at Western Carolina University.

My paintings have been exhibited in many galleries and museums including the Zimmerli Art Museum, NJ; Yale Art and Architecture Gallery, CT; Waverly Gallery, NYC; National Academy of Design, NYC; Allentown Art Museum, PA; and the Fayetteville Museum of Art, NC.
